UTC Power Systems Meet California Air Resources Board Stringent Standard

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., July 10, 2008 – UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (UTX:NYSE) company, announced that four models of its PureComfort® combined cooling, heating and power system now meet the strictest emission standards in the United States -- those established in 2007 by the California Air Resources Board.

The California Air Resources Board has issued an Executive Order for Distributed Generation Certification to UTC Power for four PureComfort® models. “We’re delighted that our ultra clean and highly efficient PureComfort® System Models 195MC, 260MC, 325MC and 390MC can now be sited at businesses in the important and growing California market,” said Marcus Rothstein, PureComfort® system general manager.

The California Distributed Generation certification program requires manufacturers of electrical generation technologies that are exempt from district permit requirements to certify their technologies to specific emission standards before they can be sold in California. These limits are expressed in pounds per megawatt hour and are currently set at 0.07 for nitrogen oxides, 0.10 for carbon monoxide and 0.02 for volatile organic compounds.

The UTC Power combined cooling, heating and power systems can achieve overall energy utilization of up to 90 percent, far greater than the 33 percent typical of the U.S. electrical grid. Exhaust waste heat generated by the PureComfort® system microturbines is used to provide space heating or cooling, thereby reducing a customer’s energy costs. The design ensures a reduction in pollutant emissions such as smog-forming nitrogen oxides, and there are no ozone-depleting refrigerants used.

“Rising electricity rates as well as the availability of incentive funding for clean energy alternatives in several states have sparked growing interest in our low-emission systems, which have been installed at data centers, supermarkets, hotels, hospitals and schools,” Rothstein said.

Capstone Turbine Corp. of Chatsworth, California, supplies microturbines to UTC Power. The two companies have collaborated for several years in the development, marketing and sales of low-emission power systems.
