UTC Power Fuel Cell Sites Win EPA and DOE Awards

SOUTH WINDSOR,  Conn. (Oct. 3, 2005) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently recognized three Connecticut facilities for generating environmentally clean and efficient energy using  PureCell™ 200 fuel cell units made by UTC Power, a company of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

Saint Francis Care hospital in Hartford, the Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort in Uncasville, and South Windsor High School received the Energy Star® CHP (combined heating and power) Award and the EPA CHP Certificate of Recognition at a Connecticut Green Building Forum recently co-sponsored by UTC.  The New York Power Authority (NYPA), which has deployed eight PureCell™ 200 units, was similarly honored last year.

“These awards confirm the environmental and energy efficiency benefits of our proven fuel cell technology,” said UTC Power President Jan van Dokkum.  “We’re honored to have manufactured the fuel cells that earned our customers EPA and DOE recognition for reducing emissions and energy consumption beyond expectation.”

Saint Francis Care’s unit requires about 25 percent less fuel than conventional power-delivery systems; the Mohegan Sun, 26 percent less; and South Windsor High School, 22 percent less. By using fuel cells to preheat the boiler feed water, the facilities are reducing fuel consumption and operating costs.

South Windsor High School uses its fuel cell for continuous power, earning its designation as a regional emergency shelter. Its 200-kilowatt system generates enough electricity to handle about 50 percent of peak demand and 100 percent of off-peak demand.

The PureCell™ 200 has operated in 19 countries, delivering clean, highly efficient power to end users.  With the flexibility to operate grid-connected, grid-independent, or both, power transition can occur instantaneously, with virtually no interruption in service or organizational productivity. UTC Power’s total installed fleet recently accumulated more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours, setting a new industry record.

United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), based in Hartford, Conn., provides high-technology products and services to the commercial building and aerospace industries. Its UTC Power unit, based in South Windsor, Conn., includes UTC Fuel Cells and is a full-service provider of environmentally advanced power solutions.
