| UTC Power Sets Fuel Cell Milestone, Announces Product Enhancements
SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., (May 24, 2005) - UTC Power, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), announced today that it has accumulated more than one billion kilowatt-hours of energy with its PureCell™ 200 power plant solution, setting a new industry standard.
"One billion kilowatt hours is enough energy to power more than 91,000 U.S. homes for one year," UTC Power President Jan van Dokkum said. "We continue to focus our efforts on improved operability, longer-life and reduced costs, as we advance phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs) using the important data accumulated from our units in the field." The sites have achieved an average electric efficiency of 38 percent. When using exhaust heat recovery, the total efficiency reaches levels exceeding 80 percent.
UTC Power's PAFC cell stack technology has demonstrated five years of consistent durability for more than seven million operating hours in the field. The company plans to double this timeframe to 10 years, or 80,000 hours, with an enhanced product expected to be commercially available in 2007. "At the same time, we are working hard to reduce costs to make the PureCell™ 200 solution a standard energy resource that secures power availability, improves efficiency and reduces environmental impact," van Dokkum adds.
The PureCell™ 200 operates in 19 countries, delivering clean, highly efficient power to its users. Customers include hospitals, telecommunication central offices, data centers, educational institutions, offices, hotels, military bases, industrial sites and wastewater treatment plants. With the flexibility to operate grid connected, grid-independent, or both, transition can occur instantaneously, with virtually no interruption of power or business productivity. The PureCell™ 200 meets the strict California Air Resources Board 2007 air emissions standards, delivering significant reductions in toxic air and greenhouse gas emissions. This makes the system one of the cleanest fossil-fueled distributed generation technologies in the world today. See how a fuel cell works>>
