What is CHP?
Combined Heat and Power (CHP), refers to the generation of both electricity and heat where both forms of energy can be utilized to satisfy needs of a facility. Also called "cogeneration", CHP utilizes the heat generated in the process of generating electricity to provide useful thermal energy.
Clean CHP solutions such as fuel cells can achieve system efficiencies as high as 90% (between 2-3 times greater than typical central generation). The reason: more than half of the energy potential in traditional, centralized power generation goes up the stack as exhaust heat. CHP fuel cell systems, such as UTC Power's PureCell, convert process heat into thermal energy that can be used by facilities, turning potential waste into useable energy.
